Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown directed a new production of his Off-Broadway musical The Last Five Years at London’s St James Theatre. Having recently been adapted into a 2014 film starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan, The Last Five Years follows two New Yorkers who fall in and out of love. An emotionally powerful story that has been retold countless times across the world, the London premiere began performances in October 2016, starring Samantha Barks and Jonathan Bailey.

The Last Five Years is told in an entirely unique format, as the pair tell their stories in opposite directions; Cathy moves in reverse through their relationship whereas Jamie starts at the beginning. When aspiring author Jamie gets the book deal of his dreams and begins to stray away at parties and events, Cathy’s own dream career remains out of her grasp and she is left grappling with the remains of their relationship.

Samantha Barks is best-known for her role as Eponine in Les Miserables, both in the 25th Anniversary Concert and the 2012 blockbuster film. Barks shot to fame after appearing in BBC’s I’d Do Anything and has since starred in Amelie and City of Angels. Jonathan Bailey is well-known for his role in ITV’s Broadchurch, as well as American Psycho, Othello and South Downs in the West End.

Jason Robert Brown directed, with musical direction from Torquil Munro. Brown is a three-time Tony Award-winner, with credits including Songs for a New World, Parade and The Bridges of Madison County. Featuring memorable songs such as “Still Hurting”, “If I Didn’t Believe in You” and “See I’m Smiling”, The Last Five Years ran at London’s St James Theatre from November 2nd to November 26th 2016, with previews having began on October 28th 2016.
