A wicked riff on high school comedies

Fans of teen movies are in for a treat with School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre this year. This sharp riff on the classic comic genre is a gleefully funny and ferociously heartwarming show.

At Aburi Girls Boarding School, Queen Bee Paulina and her clique are anxiously waiting for the Miss Ghana pageant recruiter to arrive. Paulina is a shoo-in for the title… until beautiful and talented transfer student Ericka shakes things up. Friendships and the status quo are suddenly thrown into chaos, but who will be chosen, and what will they do to get the crown?

Jocelyn Bioh’s award-winning School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play is a hilarious tribute to teenage girls that celebrates their universal (and sometimes very different) experiences around the world. After playing in the US, it won three Lucille Lortel Awards including Best Play, and a Drama Desk Award for Best Ensemble.

Its UK premiere is directed by Monique Touko (Almeida Theatre: The Clinic) with casting to be announced.
