Satyagraha Philip Glass’s grand meditation on Gandhi’s early years in South Africa, receives its third ENO revival at the London Coliseum early next year. The captivating and emotive tale follows the conception of the iconic civil rights leader’s doctrine on non-violent protest as a positive force for change.
Philip Glass’s iconic production of Satyagraha returns to the London Coliseum as part of ENO’s much anticipated 2017/18 season, which comprises revivals of some of the company’s most beloved past productions.
The opera is a grand, emotive meditation on the civil rights leader and spiritual guru Mahatma Gandhi. ‘Satyagraha’ is the name given to Ghandi’s self-conceptualised method of non-violent protest that took root in his teachings and followers throughout the long fought Indian Independence Movement.
Glass’s piece charts the leader’s early years in South Africa and moves back and forth through Gandhi’s life, with the flow of time, mixing words and sound in a beautiful maelstrom of emotion.
Artistic Director of theatre company Improbable, Phelim McDermott directs the production. McDermott made his ENO directorial debut with his now iconic premiere of Satyagraha in 2007 and returns for its third revival in under a decade.
Satyagraha will be McDermott’s second piece in this season, the first being Aida this autumn which follows sell-out performances of McDermott’s Olivier Award-winning production of Akhnaten in 2016. Contemporary music champion and former Music Director of the Staatsoper Hannover, Karen Kamensek reunites with McDermott for the production.
The title role Mahatma Gandhi will be played by British tenor Toby Spence along with an incredible ensemble, including Charlotte Beament, Anna-Clare Monk, Stephanie Marshall, Nicholas Folwell, Brindley Sherratt, Sarah Pring, Eddie Wade and Andrí Björn Róbertsson.
The productions mesmerising visual design is created with the help of Costume Designer Julian Crouch and Lighting Designer Kevin Pollard. The elegant video design is created and curated by Leo Warner and Mark Grimmer for 59 Productions Ltd.
Satyagraha is a stunning, multi-sensory opera that promises to enthral audiences once more. The production plays a limited run from the 1st to 27th February 2018.
