Shakespeare Retold: The Merchant of Venice 1936 Tickets

Experience Shakespeare in a whole new light at the Criterion Theatre as Tracy-Ann Oberman’s acclaimed The Merchant of Venice 1936 transfers into the West End for a strictly limited season. Oberman stars as Shylock in this electric show which moves the action to the 1930s East End of London, where ambition, power, antisemitism and political unrest reach boiling point.

This “essential” (Metro) new production of a classic is in London direct from a sold-out season at the Royal Shakespeare Company, so book early to not miss out.

About The Merchant of Venice 1936

1936, Cable Street. Jewish single mother and businesswoman Shylock is determined to provide for her family and protect her daughter’s future. But on the streets, Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists are marching.

When charismatic but arrogant merchant Antonio approaches her for a loan and fails to pay up, will she seek her revenge? Or will she pay the ultimate price?

This “striking and impactful” (The Guardian) new version of Shakespeare’s play puts Shylock and the Jewish community at its centre, during a key moment in British history that reverberates into the present day. After hugely successful runs at the RSC, Watford Palace Theatre and Wilton’s Music Hall in 2023, it transfers to the West End for just five weeks.
