Apollo Theatre

Ryan Calais Cameron’s compelling play about six Black men who meet in therapy transfers to the West End from the Royal Court Theatre.

A compelling, exuberant new play

After hit seasons at New Diorama Theatre and the Royal Court Theatre, profound and joyous play For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy transfers to the West End in 2023.

Six young Black men meet in group therapy and discuss father figures, fashion, African empires, lost love and jollof rice. Their good days and bad days unravel on stage as they let their imaginations run wild. Poised between light-hearted fantasy and brutal reality, For Black Boys is a mixture of music, movement, storytelling and verse as six men seek to connect, survive and thrive.

For Black Boys is inspired by Ntozake Shange's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf and was originally conceived by playwright Ryan Calais Cameron in the wake of Trayvon Martin’s death in 2013.

The For Black Boys cast are Stage Debut Award winners Mark Akintimehin, Emmanuel Akwafo, Nnabiko Ejimofor, Darragh Hand, Aruna Jalloh and Kaine Lawrence.

This vibrant play has been taken into the hearts of London audiences already, and promises to be a standout addition to the West End landscape. Book For Black Boys theatre tickets during its season at the Apollo Theatre.
