Football’s coming home to the West End this year as the National Theatre and James Graham’s Dear England transfers to the Prince Edward Theatre for a strictly limited season. Joseph Fiennes plays Gareth Southgate in this smash-hit play about the rise of the England men’s football team, and it is just as rousing, exhilarating and unmissable as the beautiful game itself.

What is Dear England about?

If England is known for one thing, it’s for losing penalty shootouts at the World Cup. Time after time, the men’s team has lined up to take their shot and found themselves hitting the bar. England gave the world football, but can’t seem to lift the trophy.

Dear England Cast and Creatives

Joseph Fiennes leads the Dear England cast as Gareth Southgate, and brings the man, and his incredible zero-to-hero journey, to the stage with uncanny ability. BAFTA nominee Fiennes is best known for his work on The Handmaid’s Tale and Shakespeare in Love.

Dear England is Olivier Award winner James Graham’s latest play, and much like most of his others, has been a huge critical and audience hit. Graham’s knack for delving into stories that examine the popular and the political is on full display here, following his other plays including Ink, and This House. He has recently enjoyed a string of successes in London theatre with Best of Enemies in the West End and Tammy Faye the musical at the Almeida Theatre.
