Joshua Harmon’s critically acclaimed play returned to the West End for a run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Bad Jews follows a Jewish family as they fight to own an important and valuable family heirloom. An incredibly poignant discussion on how families deal with grief in all its forms, Bad Jews was a hilarious yet brazen comedy.
Joshua Harmon’s critically acclaimed play about Jewish familial relations returned once again to London’s West End. After hugely successful runs at Ustinov Studio Bath, St James Theatre and a 2015 run at the Arts Theatre, Bad Jews returned for a run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. A grippingly brazen comedy, Bad Jews examined grief in all its ugly forms, focusing on how it can have a detrimental effect on families.
Directed by Michael Longhust (Constellations), Bad Jews follows two brothers Liam and Jonah and their forceful, evangelistic cousin Daphna in their fight to win a precious family heirloom. When Liam’s non-Jewish, all-American girlfriend Melody enters the poky Manhattan apartment, the true heir of the treasure is called into question, resulting into a riotously hilarious spat of arguments. A largely affecting comedy, Bad Jews also brought moments of touching poignancy, as the audience sees how grief is battled in different ways.
Ilan Goodman (The Imitation Game) reprised his role as the older, irritable Liam, opposite Antonia Kinlay (The Three Lions) as his ditzy girlfriend Melody. Ailsa Joy (TimePlays) played the devoted and over-bearing Daphna and Jos Slovick (Once) played the questionably quiet Jonah.
Harmon is an experienced writer, having produced plays such as Significant Other, A Boy Named Alice and the ever-popular Terese Raquin. Bad Jews was an interesting discussion on discovering how families deal with grief and what lengths they will go to in order to remember the deceased. Co-produced by Theatre Royal Bath Productions, Kenny Wax and Theatre Royal Haymarket Productions, Bad Jews made a welcome return to London’s West End.
