It is “a play that changed American theatre forever” (The New York Times) and now London audiences can see the power of Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun as it returns to the capital in a brand new revival. The groundbreaking story of an African American family’s hopes and dreams in Chicago’s South Side plays at Lyric Hammersmith this year, and it promises to move and challenge just as much now as it did in 1959.

What is A Raisin in the Sun about?

In a rented apartment on Chicago’s South Side, the Younger family’s hopes, dreams, grief and plans are unfolding. Their much-loved father has recently died and the money from his life insurance policy has the potential to change everything for those who are left behind.

Mama wants to put money towards a home of her own. Her daughter Beneatha wants to study and become a doctor. Her son Walter Lee thinks the money is his to spend, and he is ready to sacrifice his family bonds to make sure he gets what he wants.

As three members of the same family grapple with the prospect of escaping the barriers of a segregated society, they have to ask themselves: what makes a meaningful life in a world designed to keep you downtrodden?

Cast and Creative Team

Lorraine Hansberry smashed through barriers with this pioneering drama, which was the first play by a Black woman to be performed on Broadway. In the decades since it has inspired generations of new playwrights and continued to be relevant in its own right. This new production at Lyric Hammersmith is directed by Tinuke Craig (Jitney; The Color Purple) and retains the play’s genius balance of humour, heart and searing character study.

Casting is to be confirmed.
